On Saturday, July 21, 2007,
we pulled off another amazing Day on the Beach at Cowell's
Beach in Santa Cruz. The day was a huge success and drew
more participants than ever before! We laid down over 160
sheets of plywood to make our own accessible city on the
beach.
|
|
We were able to accommodate over 185
children and adults with special needs from all around
the state (and the country!) with the help of over 280
volunteers. We also estimate that we served over 325
additional guests (family members, friends, and caregivers.) |
| All in all, we
took over 72 participants on kayak trips and over 150
on outrigger canoe paddles in the bay. |
 |
| |
|
 |
We also offered beach wheelchair
rides and a children's play area, served more than 800
meals, and everyone rocked out to three amazing live bands.
|
We were forced to make some last-minute changes
to the day, due to high bacteria levels in the water which
exceeded safe swimming standards. To take every possible precaution
against endangering the health of any participant, we called
off the SCUBA and flotation portions of the day, but everyone
was a great sport.
The incredible kayak and SCUBA folks were
able to take out almost twice as many trips as last year,
and we offered a Beach Wheelchair Fun Run area to get
tons of people cruising around the sand with the wind in their
hair and big smiles on their faces!

We want to thank everyone for all their support--
we couldn't have offered this life-changing event without
over 45 sponsors,
hundreds of volunteers, and the dedication and commitment
of many very skilled people year after year!

See
you next year for Day on the Beach 2008!

The highlight of each year is our Annual
Day on the Beach event, where people with special needs and
volunteers team up to share a full day of kayaking, outrigger
canoeing, SCUBA diving, motorized beach wheelchair, sandcastle
building, live music, and life-changing memories. Day on the
Beach has given participants and volunteers an unforgettable
experience of breaking through barriers and seeing dreams become
reality.
